Network Security Threat

  1. Brute force attack

    • Unauthorised access to a network can be gained by using a computer program to try all possible password combinations until the correct password is found. This will give the hacker unauthorised access to the computer network.
      • To prevent this use a strong password with 8 characters including uppercase, lowercase, numbers, letters and symbols
  2. Computer virus

    • They insert themselves into any normal program. The virus is able to replicate and transfer from one computer to another. They can be activated normally through email which is attached to other files and attachments
      • To prevent this keep up to data on your anti-malware, use strong passwords and don't download from any unknown websites and don't open suspicious emails.
  3. Phishing

    • Normally an email or text message scam will be sent to victims where they are conned into beliveing that they are being contacted by an authentic organisation and can give personal details.
      • To make sure you know if someone is trying to phish you, you need to chech the grammar on the email, check if the email is relevant to you also you can check whether they have said customer instead of your name and finally the logo/title of the company and see if it is correct
        • To prevent phishing scams you need to use anti-span filters, you could set up multiple email address, don't respond to spam and just ignore it or you could think before clicking on
  4. Spyware

    • Records where your activity on the computer suck as keystrokes are being logged and sending the data back over to the attacker instigator. It can also be used to control your web cam and microphone
      • To prevent this you could use trusted antivirus software which uses anti-spyware features also don't download suspicious-looking email attachment
  5. Trojan Horse

    • Gains access to computer by pretending to be software. It allows unauthoried access to a computer without the user being aware.
      • To prevent this never download or install software from source you don't trust completely, never open or run a program sent in an email from someone you don't know also make sure a trojan antivirus is installed and running on your computer
  6. DDos Attack

    • Cyber attack in which the hacker seeks to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users by temporarily or indefinitely disrupting services of a host connected to the internet
      • To prevent this you need to use a fire wall to control which of the programs are allowed into the network
  7. Computer Worm

    • The worm will spread like a virus but doesn't need human intervention. They attach themselves to network tools to spread them around automatically around a network very quickly.
      • To prevent this you need to install good anti-virus software, never download from untrusted websites or emails
  8. SQL Injection

    • Is a code injected to manipulate to access information which is not intended to be displayed( costumer details, company data ect)
      • To prevent this you can use penetration testing to check for vulnerabilities in the SQL code and report back also validating user input so the website form wont accept SQL statements or characters
  9. Social Engineering

    • Social engineering is the term used for a broad range of malicious activities accomplished through human interactions. It uses psychological manipulation to trick users into making security mistakes or giving away sensitive information.
      • To prevent this you can ask multiple questions to see what they are doing
