Peripherals
Peripherals are devices which are not parts of the computers core.
Peripherals include input hardware, output hardware and storage devices
Peripherals connect to the processor hardware through the motherboard .
External devices will connect to the motherboard through USB and Firewire
Types of inputs
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Trackball
- Scanner
Wireless Inputs
- RFID Chips
- Radio Frequency ID Chips
- Basic types of wireless communications. When they are passed through a special electrical field ,they broadcast data through high frequency radio waves
- Used in tracking and identification
- NFC
- Near Field Communication
- NFC is similar to RFID but NFC allows two way communication
- Used in smartphones and in contactless payment systems
- Magnetic Strip
- Different types of cards use magnetic bands to store information
- Used in Credit Cards, Debit Cards and Security Access Cards
- Barcode Reader
- Barcodes are scanned by a reader and the numbers in the code match with records in a database
- Used to identify Goods and Products
- RFID Chips
Sensors
- Used in Security, temperature control, motion and eye tracking
- Motion sensors
- Motion sensors send a beam of light and can detect if the beam is broken
- They also use radio and sound waves, which reflect back if blocked
- Passive Sensors
- The sensor doesn't send out signals it only receives a signal
Outputs
- Screen
- Printer
- Speakers
Inputs & Outputs Combined
- Soundcard
- Microphone
- Interactive whiteboard
Internal storage
- Stores the operating system and software applications
SSD's VS HDD's
- Solid State Drive
- SSD's are about 10 times more expensive than HDD'S
- SSD's are no larger than 512GB
- SSD's are almost twice as fast at loading up and copying files
- SSD's are silent
- Hard Disk Drives
- HDD's go up to 4TB
- HDD's use 3 times more power than SSD's
- HDD's make spinning disc sounds
- Solid State Drive
Optical storage
- CD's ,DVD and Bluray disks are Optical storage
- They are useful lightweight media for transporting data and programs
Direct and Sequential memory
- Direct memory is memory known as Random access
- Sequential storage is slower than Direct Memory
Assistive technology
- Screen Magnifier
- Screen Readers
- Eye Tracking
- Braille keyboard and printer
