Text-based Adventure Game
Prescribed Criteria
- The story must have at least 10 different variables in total
- Create a text-based adventure game Create the game in Python using Thonny
- All variables must be different
- The story must have at least 10 variables
- Each input must have at least two choices
- The game must provide choices for the player at each junction. These choices should take the story in different directions
- Each input must have a minimum of two choices. For example: ‘Turn left’ OR ‘Turn right’
- Must use a WHILE loop
- The game must use the WHILE loop at least once
- The loop must execute the function within
- Must use variables to match the storyline
- The variables used must relate to the storyline. For example, for fantasy, the variable could be ‘dragon_name’ or ‘forest_name’
- Variables must be written using accepted naming conventions such as marketSquare or underscore between two words
- The story must have at least 10 different variables in total
Self-determined Criteria
- Use ASCII art for my story
- Use at least 2 ASCII arts in my story
- The art must be relevant to the story theme
- The story is spoken in first person
- The storyline speaks in “I”, “myself” and “me”
- Use ASCII art for my story
Ideas for story
- first perspective
- The story is said in first person perspective
- E.g: I arrived in the kitchen, what should I do?
- The story is said in first person perspective
- Add a health counter
- A health counter that goes down in certain outcomes
- E.g: health goes down 1 if an unfamiliar word was typed in
- A health counter that goes down in certain outcomes
- Change to fantasy text-based story
- The story is based on adventures in a fantasy world
- E.g: Kingdoms, dragons, hags, sirens, etc
- The story is based on adventures in a fantasy world

Existing text-based adventure games
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
- A science fiction about an Englishman with a companion named Ford Prefect on an adventure in space
- Pos: The game has a lot of unexpected plot twists
- Neg: The game needs specific words to continue
- A science fiction about an Englishman with a companion named Ford Prefect on an adventure in space
- Genesis MUD
- Free to play text-based centred on exploration, roleplay and combat
- Pos: A wide range of places to travel and complete freedom
- Neg: A lot of complex puzzles and not enough combat
- Free to play text-based centred on exploration, roleplay and combat
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Algorithm constructs
- Sequence
- A set of instructions that are processed one after the other
- e.g: Getting a book ->START Go to bookshelf Take a random book STOP
- A set of instructions that are processed one after the other
- Assignment
- Storing a value in a variable
- e.g: START DECLARE animal SET animal TO cat OUTPUT “the animal is a cat” STOP
- Storing a value in a variable
- Selection and Condition
- Uses a condition to select which line of program will be used next
- e.g: IF colour is green THEN OUTPUT Input green ELSE OUTPUT Look again ENDIF
- Uses a condition to select which line of program will be used next
- Iteration
- Also called repetition, used when something is repeated over and over again in a loop
- e.g: FOR 5 seconds MOVE backwards ENDFOR
- e.g: WHILE distance is 2cm STOP ENDWHILE
- Also called repetition, used when something is repeated over and over again in a loop
- Modularisation
- To break down complex systems into smaller self-contained units or modules
- Sequence
Coding constructs
- IF statements
- executes a command if the condition is true
- e.g: IF you go left THEN you walk down a long path ENDIF
- executes a command if the condition is true
- FOR loops
- Used for iterating over a sequence
- e.g FOR 5 steps TURN left ENDFOR
- Used for iterating over a sequence
- IF statements
