Formulas
- =A1+B1
- '+' is plus
- =A2-B2
- '-' is minus
- =A3*B3
- '*' is multiply
- =A4/B4
- '/' is divide
- =SUM(A1:E1)
- this SUM function is used to add up cells A1, E1 and everything in between with out this we would have a very large sum of A1+B1+C1+D1+E1
- =AVERAGE(A1:E1
- average will find the average of cells A1:E1 and everything in between
- =IF(A1>69, "PASS" , "FAIL"
- IF functions make decisions. if the test score is larger than 69, the test result of 'pass' will be displayed. otherwise the result of 'fail' will be displayed
- =MIN(A1:E1)
- this finds the smallest number in the range of A1:E1
- =MAX(A1:E1)
- this find the largest number in the range of cells A1:E1
- =A1+B1
Benefits
- when data changes , formulas automatically recalculate
- charts and graphs can be produced and customized very easily
- computer do not make mathematical errors like humans, but GIGO still applies
- you can change info in a spread sheet model to make and test predictions (what if investigations)
Formatting
- coloured borders, or lines, can be added to the edge of each cell
- cells can be formatted according to their data type, e.g. cells with money can automatically have a pound sign (£) placed at the front by assigning a currency data type
- cells can be merged or combined together, e.g. cells A1:C1 can merge together to form one big cell
- the font can be changed, e.g. font style, colour, bold or italics
- the background fill tool can change the colour of the cells
