1. Weathering

   • happens the fastest at continental collisions, new mountains and fresh rocks
   • slow weathering on the flat, growth of plants
   • Acid breaks down minerals from lava and magma
     • • part of the carbon cycle
         • Taking co2 out of atmospher
           • oceans.weathering, and plants
             • if oceans get warmer, can't hold as much co2 and releases it into atmosphere creating positive feedback
         • Adding co2

2. Treaty 1961

   • No more claiming land, no militaries( except to assist science program logistics), Science (generally peaceful)

   • First one to set foot somewhere and plant flag

   • demonstrate active use of the area
     • whaling. post office, military and science stations

4. International Geophysical Year (IGY) 1957 - 58

   • 12 nations united
     • many stations created in this year (amundson scott)
       • 1st south pole station
     • laid the foundation for a treaty
