1. Polymers

   • Thermosoftening
     • Consist of individual, tangled polymer chains.
     • Soften and Melt when heated
       • Intermolecular forces are weakened when warmed, letting the chains slide over each other.
     • Examples
       • Poly(Propene)
       • Poly(Ethene)
   • Thermosetting
     • Consist of polymer chains with cross links between them
     • Do not soften and melt when heated.
   • Polymers are large molecules made when small molecules join together.

2. Nano-Particles

   • May contain only a few hundred atoms. There small size means that:
     • A high surface area to volume ratio
       • Good for catalyists
     • Properties different from the same substance in larger pieces.
   • Uses
     • Computers
     • Catalyists
     • Coatings e.g self cleaning windows.
     • Highly selective sensors to detect substances.
     • Lighter and stronger construction materials.
     • Cosmetics
   • Nano-Tubes
     • Made of carbon and have a structure similar to a graphite layer rolled into a tube.
     • Very stronng
     • Conduct electricity
