Chapter 12

  1. Induction training takes place on your first day of work and is given to new employees.

  2. Training is not just on the first day, it continues throughout a person's career.

  3. On-the job training takes place in work where the job will be done. An existing experienced worker will teach the inexperienced employee.

    • Advantage: Gets new employees to work straight away.
    • Advantage: Makes the experienced worker feel more valuable to the business.
    • Disadvantage: There may be too many distractions, so it may be difficult for the new employee to concentrate. Meaning mistakes are made.
  4. Off-the job training takes place away from the job at another location. It may be done in a day release fashion (one day a week) or it may be done it chunks.

    • Advantage: It makes them feel valued by the business.
    • Advantage: The courses are run by specialists who have been trained how to train, so they can explain things more effectively than other people may be able to.
    • Disadvantage: This may be broader than on-the job training and the employee may think a lot of the information they learn is irrelevant.
    • Disadvantage: While employees are away from their jobs a backlog of work may build up which may be hard to catch up on.
  5. Things that should be considered when choosing the most appropriate type of training:

    • What the training is.
    • The safety of the employees.
    • The cost.
    • The time the training will take.
    • Possible disruption to other customers of employees.
  6. Training courses that take place in a purpose built training centre/hotel can be expensive.

    • Businesses need to balance the cost of the training with the benefits of the training (e.g. increased motivation/quality).
    • Travel costs also need to be taken into account in terms of fuel and time taken to get to the venue.
  7. In places like retail, training will most likely have to be done away from the workplace as it could seem unprofessional to customers if a server makes a lot of mistakes.

    • If it was done on the job it could put off customers.
  8. Induction Training:

    • Where new employees are trained to know what is expected of them and what to do in emergencies.
    • Information given about the business and what it does.
      • This is a good time to explain the business aims and objectives.
    • There could also be a tour of the premises.
    • They will be introduced to other employees and other key people they will be working with.
    • Their training needs may be assessed.
    • If employees start at the same times teams can develop.
    • The purpose is to increase efficiency of the business so that when they start work the employees feel more knowledgeable and feel they fit in more with their co-workers.
  9. Benefits of Training

    • Motivates staff: Increases the trainer's self esteem and the trainee feels his skills are being developed.
    • As technology develops and some jobs disappear it is important to retrain in order to minimse redundancy.
    • Reduces accidents in the work place as people are more aware of them, this avoids expensive issues for the business.
    • It increases the efficiency of employees meaning higher output and less waste. Plus trained employees can do a variety of tasks meaning that the business can respond better to change.
    • Businesses can confidently upgrade to new technology as they can be sure their employes can use it due to training.
