Keywords
- Formula- uses numbers or cell references and mathematical operates (+-*/)
- Function- series of instructions which are pre-programmed in order to simplify complex tasks e.g. V LOOKUP.
- Variable- the contents of a cell which can be changed e.g. arrival date.
- Rule- these are usually logical tests which can provide results based on an input. E.g. if(A3>10, “Well done”, ”detention!”)

why do we use spread sheets?
- Interfaces can be adapted to our needs
- Calculations are carried out instantly
- Allows for validation of data.
- Calculations will be carried out the same way every time this can make it more accurate. However the formulas must be correct in the first place.
Formula Vs Function
- Formula
- A formula is typed directly into the formula bar
- Formulas are simple calculations
- Formulas do not have built-in wizards
- Function
- A function is built into the software.; it is a special type of formula
- Functions are used to simplify complicated maths
- A function often has a built-in wizard to help you complete them e.g. VLOOKUP
