Four Different Leadership Styles

Autocratic Style

Makes decisions on their own and give out orders

Identify the objectives of the business

Advantage: Good for unskilled workers and crisis management.

Disadvantage: Can cause frustration and resentment within the work force, dependent on the leader.

Paternalistic Style

Leader consults the workers before making decisions

Explains the decisions in an act of persuasion

Advantage: Good for the workers as the leader involves them

Disadvantage: Can cause slow decision-making due to consulting period

Democratic Style

Leader encourages the workforce to participate in the decision-making process

Discuss issues with workers, delegate responsibility and listen to advice

Good communicators

Advantage: Shows confidence in the workforce

Disadvantage: Can be time consuming

Laissez-Faire

Weak form of Leadership

Might offer employees coaching and support

Rarely interfere in the running of the business

Advantage: Shows a lot of confidence in the workforce

Disadvantage: No actually leading could be a clash of how proceed on certain ideas within the workers

McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y

Theory X

They are lazy, dislike work and are motivated by money

Need to be supervised and controlled or they will underperform

Have no wish or ability to help make decisions or take on responsibility

Not interested in the needs of the organization and lack ambition

Theory Y

Workers have many different needs, enjoy work and seek satisfaction from it

Workers will organize themselves and take responsibility if they are trusted to do so

Poor performance is likely to be due to boring or monotonous work or poor management

Workers wish to and should contribute to decisions
