Teaching Methods
Interactive Lecture:
- Highly effective for certain types of learners.
- Lecture is a discourse or formal presentation given before a group of learners especially for the purpose of instruction.
- A system of conveying information, explaining facts or details, or describing practices and procedures.
- Kept brief and to the point.
- More effective if used in conjunction with other methods and techniques so that frequent variation of the stimuli occurs--otherwise known as interactive lectures.
Demonstration and Practice:
- Highly effective in illustrating a manipulative procedure or clarifying a principle.
- Master educators use the demonstration method of teaching to bring the lesson or presentation to life.
- It provides educators with the opportunity to perform an actual skill or procedure that will be later performed by the students.
- Used to help clarify and instill the underlying theory of a procedure into the minds of the learners.
- Preparation.
- This occurs prior to delivering the demonstration.
- It includes identifying the objectives of the lesson to be certain that the demonstration will achieve them.
- It includes preparing the students for the lesson and motivating them to observe, listen, and learn.
- It involves gathering and organizing all materials and tools necessary for the demonstration ahead of time.
- It also requires the educator to take the necessary steps to ensure that all students can see and hear the demonstration clearly.
- Demonstration.
- Avoid distractions while showing and explaining a single fundamental procedure completely by going through a step-by-step process.
- They will perform the demonstration at an appropriate speed, ensuring students do not miss key points or steps.
- Emphasis is placed on special techniques.
- Safe practice will be demonstrated and emphasized.
- Students will be questioned during the demonstration to verify their understanding.
- Master educators observe nonverbal Cues from the students that indicate how they are responding to the demonstration and take appropriate action.
- A master educator will not pass an object around for student consideration during a demonstration.
- Master educators will involve the learners in the demonstration whenever possible.
- Practice or Application.
- This has also been called the "return demonstration."
- After the educator has completed his demonstration, students must have the opportunity to practice the skill or procedure under educator supervision.
- This practice should occur as soon after the demonstration as possible.
- Practical application of procedures allows students to acquire skill and to progress at a rate most suited to their learning style.
