1920s the gramophone became the main way of bringing music to a wider audience

Soon to be joined by radio broadcasting

Recording companies spurred on the development of Jazz by searching for artists that would be commercially successful

Recording for Gramophone was done using a recording horn

Vibrations of the sound are recorded as patterns on a wax disc

This would produce a mould from which multiple could be stamped onto shellac disk

Shellac disks are limited to 3 minutes on each side

Forced musicians to organise their pieces in a compact style

Early recordings suffered with musical balance

Bass instruments were difficult to record adequately

Tuba often replaced the double bass in the early years of recording

Development of first microphones enabled electrical recording to replace the acoustic method after 1925

End product still a shellac disk

Microphones improved in quality and were soon able to cope with the bigger bands of the 1930s

Development of tape recording and the LP in the 1940s revolutionised the record industry

Each side of LP = 20 mins

Tape made it possible to edit and splice sections together

Sound engineers could have better control over recording conditions

Allowed Jazz musician to develop ideas

Individual microphones
