- BPhenotypic variation in a population
- CInbreeding with relatives
- DAdaptation of a population to neutral environments
2Evolution acts at the level of the
- Acommunity
- Bspecies
- Cpopulation
- Decosystem
- Eindividual
3Which statement most accurately describes the process of natural selection?
- AHeritable traits that promote reproduction become more frequent in a population over time.
- BOnly the strongest survive.
- CSurvival of the fittest.
- DOrganisms change by random chance over time.
- EThe strong eliminate the weak in the race for survival.

5All traits present in nature are a result of evolution due to natural selection.
- ARichtig
- BFalsch
6Movement of individuals into a population can result in evolution.
- ARichtig
- BFalsch
7Natural selection is a completely random process.
- ARichtig
- BFalsch
8In the Hardy-Weinberg equation, p + q = 1, p and q represent
- AFrequency of genotypes in the population
- BSpecific combination of alleles in an individual
- CAll of these
- DFrequency of alleles of a single gene
9Which of the following represents the frequency of heterozygotes in a population that is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?

10Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium will not occur in a population in which:
- AMutations do not occur
- BIndividuals mate at random
- CNatural selection does not occur
- DIndividuals immigrate or emigrate
- ESexual selection does not occur
11Which statement is NOT true about the maintenance of variation in a population?
- AOnly phenotypes are acted on by selection, so heterozygotes serve as a reservoir of recessive alleles that may be adaptive in a different environment.
- BVariations allow for the presence of conditions such as sickle cell anemia.
- CSelection for adaptation to a particular environment ensures that the population will become stronger and more viable under all conditions.
- DHeterozygote advantages may lead to selection for the heterozygote above either homozygote.
12Species that evolved more recently will be more advanced and better than their ancestral forms.
- ARichtig
- BFalsch
13Fossil and genetic evidence strongly support the idea that modern humans
- Aindependently arose from three different ancestral Homo species in Africa and Eurasia.
- Bderive from Neanderthals that independently evolved the features of modern humans in Europe and Africa.
- Call derive from a single African lineage that spread from there into other parts of the world.
- Dderive from a hybridization of several African and Eurasian Homo species.
14High concentrations of melanin resulting in darker skin reduces vitamin D production in regions of low UV.
- ARichtig
- BFalsch
15UV light is used to produce vitamin D, however excessive amounts degrade folate, an essential vitamin. People whose ancestors lived in the tropics have darker skin because:
- Adark skin protected vitamin D from degradation
- Bdark skin provides protection from folate degradation
- Cdark skin allowed increased production of vitamin D
- Ddark skin was important for social interactions
- Edark skin keeps people warmer
