what are the surgical techniques for castration? | -Open -Closed -scrotal ablation |
What is the procedure for an open castration? | push the testicle into the neck of the testicle, incise over it through the skin, then the vaginal tunic and dartos. DO NOT cut through the tunica albuginae. Extract the testicle and peal back the vaginal tunic, tear the scrotal ligament, double clamp the cord (not clamping the piriform plexus) Ligate and chop off checking for bleeding and repeat with the second testicle. Close the skin with 2-3 interrupted or intra-derma sutures. |
What is the difference between the open and closed techniques? | The vaginalis isn't cut on a closed castration, it must be double ligated also |
When is scrotal ablation acceptable? | in cases of scrotal neoplasia |
How should rabbits be castrated? | Using the closed technique/ sophie technique (open the vaginalis then close it when completing the operation. |
