Question Answer
Weather and ℃limate Unit 1.1 Page 218
What is weather? weather is the day to day conditions of the atmosphere at a particular place.
what is climate? climate is the long-term weather pattern for a place or region.
Weather includes: all the daily changes in temperature, precipitation, wind, sunshine, humidity and atmospheric pressure.
Define humidity: the amount of moisture in the air.
Define atmospheric pressure: the weight of the air pressing down on the earths surface.
what affects atmospheric pressure? when air is heated by energy of the sun, it rises which causes low pressure. when air cools, it sinks towards the earths surface which forms areas of high pressure.
what are low pressure systems associated with? unsettled weather, while high pressure are usually settle or fine weather
what influences seasons? the angle at which the suns rays reach the earth, the changing seasons and the number of daylight hours.
Define aspect: the direction in which a feature faces.
Define altitude: elevation
how does distance from the sea affect rainfall? winds blowing off warm seas carry a lot of moisture, so places near the coast often receive higher rainfall then those further inland
how do mountain barriers affect temperature and rainfall? orographic rainfall
what are prevailing winds? the direction in which the wind blows most often
what is altitude height above sea level
how does seasonal differences affect temperature? from december to february the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun
under what conditions does rain develop when growing cloud droplets become too heavy to remain in the cloud and as a result fall to the earths surface
what is precipitation any form of moisture
examples of precipitation: rain, hail, snow and dew
what is coalescence? merging of the smallest cloud droplets to create larger droplets of water
hail: made up of frozen raindrops
snow: tiny ice crystals
dew: water vapour in the air
frontal rainfall: when a cold and a warm area mass meet
the point at which the air masses meat is called a? front.
orographic rainfall: occurs when a mist body of air is forced to rise by a mountain range.
convectional rainfall: when energy of the suns heats the earths surface and causes water to evaporate
condensation level: dew point
climate graphs: show the average temperature and rainfall experienced at a particular place throughout the year
what do meteorologists do construct and collect data for climate graphs
how can climates be described? very hot, hot, warm, cool, cold or very cold.
what does climate influence in australia lifestyle and land uses
why is australia dry? cold ocean currents, flat continent, high pressure systems and shape of the continent
