Frozen (Joos) Also called static register, it's printed, unchanging language and wording is exactly the same when spoken (e.g. the Pledge of Allegiance of the USA)
Formal (Joos) One way participation; no interruption; technical vocab or exact definitions are important; includes presentations or intros between strangers (e.g. This assignment is not acceptable in its present format)
Consultative (Joos) Two way participation; background info is provided - prior knowledge is not assumed. Backchannel behavior is common, interruptions are allowed (e.g. teacher/student "I can't accept this in its current format")
Casual (Joos) In group of friends and acquaintances; no background info provided; ellipsis and slang common (e.g. This work is a no-go can't take it)
Intimate (Joos) Non-public, intonation more important than working or grammar; private vocab. Also includes non verbal messages. Most common among family and close friends
