Enzymes speed up chemical reactions

They catalyse metabolic reactions

Intracellular-within cellsExtracellular-outside cells, e.g. in the blood and digestive system

Enzymes are globular proteins; they have an active site, which has a specific shape. The specific shape of the active site is determined by the enzyme's tertiary structure. The shape of the substrate has to be complementary.
