GLOSSARY Mass Spectrometer- Working out; abundances, RAM, RMM, nom. of isotopes  m/z= Mass to charge ratio (x-axis) Abundance= how much of one isotope compared with another which is relative (y-axis) The higher the m/z ratio of the ion the less it's deflected and the further to the right on the spectrum 2+ ions= found at m/z value of half the 1+ ion e.g. Ne-20 (+) = 20       Ne-20 (2+) =10Fragmentation= the break down of a molecule by breaking down the bond of a covalent molecule in the mass spectrometerAtomic Mass Spectra: To find the RAM (Ar)e.g. (abundance x mass) + (abundance x mass)                           Total abundance  Molecular mass spectra: To find the Mr of the molecular which is the highest mass peak on the x-axis Organic chemists can use fragmentation peaks to work out the structure of an organic molecule Molecular ion= loss of an electron from a molecule. it always has the highest mass Relative Atomic Mass= the average mass of an atom relative to 1/12th of the mass of carbon-12
