Acceptable use policies (AUP):

Network policies are documents written to outline the rules that users are required to follow while using a computer network.

Each documents are often several pages long, written and agreed by a committee.

Disaster Recovery:

Given the amount of important data often stored on a computer network, it is essential that an effective disaster recovery policy be in place, in the event of data being lost due to a disaster.

Disasters include: fire, flood, terror attack, hardware/ software failure, accidental and malicious damage e.g hacking.

Three-part disaster recovery polices:

Before the disaster: Risk analysis, preventative measures and staff training.

During the disaster: Staff response - implement contingency plans.

After the disaster: Recovery measures, purchasing replacement hardware, re-installing software, restoring data from backups.

Backup:

A backup is the process of copying data so that it can be preserved and restored if the original data is lost.

You should use a backup policy to sort your backups.

Backup policies:

A typical backup policy would require that three different backups are kept at any given time with at least one stored off site.

The Grandfather policy is the oldest policy, the father policy is the second oldest policy and the son is the newest policy

When a new backup is taken the son becomes the father and the father becomes the grandfather. Old grandfather is overwritten by new son.

they should all be stored on three different drives.

Archiving:

Data held on a system is often archived.

Archiving id the process of storing data which is no longer in current or frequent use.

It is held for security, legal or historical reasions.

the process of archiving data frees up recources on the main computer system and allows faster acess to the data that is in use.
