- 1processorControls the operation of the computer and perfoms its data processing functions. When there is only one processor, it is often reffered to as the central processing unit (CPU)
- 2Main memoryStores data and programs. When computer is shut down, the contents of the memory are lost. aka real memory or primary memory
- 3I/O modulesMove data between the computer and its external environment
- 4system busProvides communication among processors, main memory, and I/O modules
- 5MARmemory adress register
- 6MBRMemory buffer register
- 7user-visible registersprogrammer somehow can control registers
- 8control and status registersused by processor to control operation of the processor and execution of the programs
- 9PCProgram counter. Contains the address of the next instruction to be fetched
- 10IRInstruction register. Contains the instruction most recently fetched
- 11Data registerscan be assigned to a variety of functions by the programmer. They can be used by any machine, but there are restrictions. For example: dedicated registers for floats or integers
- 12Address registerscontein main memory addresses of data. May be general purpose or devoted to a particular way. (Index, segment ptr, stack ptr)
- 13Index registerIndexed addressing involves adding an index to a base value to get the effective address
- 14Segment pointerSegmented addressing is divided into segments which are variable-length blocks of words
- 15Stack pointerAllows the use of instructions that contain no address field, such as push and pop
