- 1—release sustain pedal
- 2—engage sustaining pedal
- 3—tremolo or flutter-tonguing
a rapidly repeated note
number of slashes indicates frequency to repeat/alternate the note
- 4—acciaccatura, a very short ornamental note played before a principal melodic note
- 5—appogiatura; the first half of the principal note's duration has the pitch of the grace note
- 6—lower mordent: rapidly play principal note, the note below it, then return to principal note for remaining duration of principal note
- 7—turn; indicates a sequence of upper auxiliary note, principal note, lower auxiliary note, principal note
- 8—upper mordent; the same as lower mordent but higher instead of lower note
- 9—pause; a note is sustained
- 10—trill; rapid alteration between specified note and the next higher note
- 11—marcato; play the note louder/more forcefully
- 12—accent; play the note louder or with harder attack
- 13—tenuto; play the note slightly longer
- 14—sspiccato; bounce the bow
