Mouth	Large molar teeth grind the food. Large amounts of saliva mix with food to help move it along to the oesophagus
Oesophagus	One end connects to the mouth, the other connects to the stomach.
Rumen First stomach	Micro-organisms convert cellulose, starch and sugar into fatty acids; and proteins into amino acids.
Reticulum Second stomach	Food is further broken down by microbes
Omasum Third stomach	70% of water is absorbed, so stomach contents are reduced in volume
Abomasum Fourth stomach	Gastric juice is secreted
Small intestine	Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose; proteins into amino acids. Glucose, amino acids, vitamins and minerals are absorbed into the bloodstream
Caecum	Micro-organisms digest any remaining cellulose
Large intestine	Water is absorbed and waste material is compacted and stored before being egested through the anus
