  1. 1What is heat?A measure of energy, it is measured in joules
  2. 2What is temperature?Tells us how hot something is. It is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles, it is measured in degrees Celsius
  3. 3Where does energy flow? From areas with a high temperature to areas with a low temperature
  4. 4What is specific heat capacity a measure of?How much energy a substance can store
  5. 5What is specific heat capacity? The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1 degree
  6. 6Name a liquid that has a high specific heat capacityWater
  7. 7What formula is used to work out energy involving specific heat capacity?Energy=Mass x Specific heat capacity x Temperature change
  8. 8What happens when you heat a liquid? The heat energy makes the particles move faster, eventually big bubbles of gas form in the liquid, this is boiling
  9. 9What happens when you heat a solid?Heat energy makes the particles vibrate faster, eventually the particles start to move around, this is melting
  10. 10What happens when a substance is melting or boiling? You are still putting energy in but this energy is used for breaking intermolecular bonds rather than raising the temperature
  11. 11What happens when a substance is condensing of freezing?Bonds are forming between particles which releases energy. This means the temperature doesn't go down until all the substance has turned into a liquid or a solid
  12. 12What is specific latent heat?Energy needed to change state
  13. 13What is the specific latent heat of melting?Amount of energy needed to melt 1kg of material without changing its temperature
  14. 14What is the specific latent heat of boiling?Energy needed to boil 1kg of material without changing its temperature
  15. 15What is the formula to workout energy that involves specific latent heat?Energy=Mass x Specific latent heat
  16. 16What happens to particles in a solid? When one particle vibrates it bumps into other particles nearby and passes the vibrations on
  17. 17What happens when a particle vibrates faster in a solid? It passes on their extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles, these particles then vibrate faster themselves. This process continues throughout the solid and the extra heat is spread all the way through the solid causing a temperature rise
  18. 18What is conduction of heat? The process where vibrating particles pass on extra kinetic energy to neighbouring particles
  19. 19What state does conduction occur mainly in?Solids
  20. 20Why does metal conduct heat well?Because some of the electrons in a metal are free to move inside the metal
  21. 21What are non-metals good for?Insulating things
  22. 22What does convection occur in?Liquids and gases
  23. 23What happens when you heat up a liquid or gas?The particles move faster and the fluid expands becoming less dense. This fluid rises, then cools down becoming more dense and falls. Then gets re-heated and repeats.
  24. 24What is a circulation of fluid called?A convection current
  25. 25When does convection occur? When the more energetic particles move from the hotter region to the cooler region and take their heat energy with them
  26. 26Why can't convection happen in solids?Because the particles in a solid can't move
  27. 27What is radiation? How we get heat from the sun
  28. 28How is heat radiated? As infrared waves, these are electromagnetic waves that travel in straight lines at the speed of light
  29. 29What does the amount of radiation emitted or absorbed by an object depend on?Its surface colour and texture
  30. 30How much radiation does a hot object emit? The hotter an object gets, the more heat radiation it emits
  31. 31What will cooler objects do?Cooler objects will absorb the heat radiation emitted by hotter things so their temperature increases
  32. 32What are matt black surfaces good at?Good absorbers and emitters of radiation
  33. 33What do light coloured smooth and shiny objects do?They are poor absorbers and emitters of radiation as they reflect heat radiation
