  1. 1Wide Area Network (WAN)A network consisting of smaller sub-networks, relying on third-party carriers
  2. 2Local Are Network (LAN)A number of computing devices on a single site, usually on a single geographical area
May consist of a number of computers and other devices, including printers and a central server
Can very quickly transmit data, but only over a short distance
  3. 3Network TopologiesBus
    Star
    Mesh
    Wireless
  4. 4Physical Bus TopologyAll endpoints are connected to a single central cable (backbone)
The cable is connected to terminators, preventing signals from repeating
Nodes are passive - they do not need to actively receive things
Only one computer can successfully transmit at any point in time
  5. 5Bus topology advantagesCheap to install - limited wiring needed
    Easy to add devices
  6. 6Bus topology disadvantagesBackbone cable is a single point of failure - if it fails, no nodes can transmit or receive
Cable can get crowded with large amounts of traffic
Number of nodes limited by length of the backbone cable
Nodes are passive and therefore can see all data transmissions - easy to packet sniff
  7. 7Physical star topologyOne central node acts as a router to transmit to all other nodes (often a switch)
A switch keeps a record of MAC addresses for devices on the network
Nodes are active - they have to physically receive data
  8. 8Star topology advantagesFailure of a single cable will only compromise one node
Congestion less likely because of one-one wiring
    High transmission speeds
The system is more secure - other devices can't see traffic on the switch
Easy to add new nodes without network disruption
  9. 9Star topology disadvantagesLots of cable - costly to install
Switch is a single point of failure
  10. 10Physical mesh topologyEvery node is connected to every other node by transmitting data across intermediate nodes
Only one node needs an internet connection
  11. 11Mesh topology advantagesSelf-healing - reliability of network increases with the addition of new nodes
No central switch makes communication faster
  12. 12Mesh topology disadvantagesExpensive if cables are used
Less secure - nodes can see traffic they are routing
  13. 13Wireless NetworksWi-Fi can be used to communicate on networks
    Often use a mesh structure
  14. 14Wireless Connection RequirementsDevices need a wireless network adapter - usually a Network Interface Controller (NIC)
The device combined with the NIC makes a station
A Wireless Access Point controls the devices on the network and dictates the radio frequencies used
  15. 15Wireless mesh network advantagesNo cabling costs
Self-healing - reliability improves with larger node numbers
    New nodes are automatically incorporated
Faster communications - packets don't have to travel via a central switch
  16. 16Physical vs logical topologiesPhysical topology - the actual layout of the cables making up the layout
Logical topology - the path the data takes through the network - controls how different nodes interact
Physical and logical topologies are independent e.g. a star topology can be programmed to act as a logical bus network (Ethernet does this)
