Gorilla - 6List the 4 main Primate adaptations to arboreality on their HANDS?1)Flat nails
2)Pentadactyly
3)Tactile pads
4)Prehensility - 7Describe how the tactile pads at the terminals of primate digits are adaptive. (3 points)-They have a reduction of hairs, allowing exploration with hands
-They have highly sensitive nerve endings (neurofibrils)
-They have sweat glands which allow better grip - 8What is prehensility? And how are various primates adapted to have it. (4 points)Prehensility is the ability to grip.
-Prosimians and New World monkeys have claws for precision grip
-Some monkeys have prehensile tails (spider monkey)
-Apes have an opposable thumb - 9How has primate posture adapted? They are tended towards erectness.
Seen with: vertical climbing, brachiation, upright sitting and bipedal walking. - 10What is the name for the arm swinging motion used my many apes to travel through the trees?Brachiation.
- 11In what ways are primates adapted for Brachiation? (3 points)-Clavicle, allowing shoulder flexibility.
-Prehensility.
-Stereoscopic vision. - 12Describe how smell has adapted in Primates.Microsmatic
Olfaction bulbs are reduced as they are diurnal and mainly rely on sight. Smell most depended upon as a sense for nocturnal mammals. - 13What type of vision is seen in Primates?Binocular and Stereoscopic
- 14What is meant by binocular vision and why is it seen in primates? The visual field of both eyes overlap, each eye relays information to both sides of the brain. It gives precise depth precision, allowing moving through trees to be more safe.
- 15Why is panoramic vision seen in non-primate mammals?E.g. a rabbit.
It is associated with flat terrain and predation, allows large areas to be seen at once. Easier to detect predators. - 16Describe how light is detected in a primate eye.Rod receptor cells detect light, they are found in the periphery of the retina. There are 32 rods to 1 ganglion nerve cell. So light detection is very sensitive but has low resolution.
- 17Describe how colour is detected in the primate eye.Cone receptor cells detect red-green-blue waves. Cones are found in the fovea (central retina) and there are 1.3 cones to 1 ganglion nerve cell. So colour detection is not sensitive, but has high resolution.
- 18Why is colour vision beneficial in primates?Food detection
Predator detection - 19Describe 4 main ways to measure 'intelligence'1) Actual brain size (blue whale bigger than human)
2) Relative brain:body weight (blue whale bigger ratio than humans)
3) Encephalisation Quotient (predict brain size compare with actual, humans 3x larger than predicted)
4)Ratio of neocortex to rest of the brain
