- 1How many planets are in the solar system?8
- 2Other than planets name 3 things that orbit the sunDwarf planets
Comets
Dust - 3Approximately how old is the solar system?5 thousand million years old
- 4What is the source of the Sun's energy? The fusion of Hydrogen Nuclei
- 5What are comets made of?Balls of rock, dust and ice left over from the formation of the solar system
- 6Roughly how many stars make up the milky way?About 100 000 000 000
- 7What is a light year? The distance that light travels through a vacuum in a year
- 8Roughly how many times larger is the diameter of the milky way than the diameter of the sun?6 billion times
- 9Briefly describe parallax and how it's used to measure the distance of nearby starsParallax = something appears to move when you look at it from different places.
Astronomers take pictures of the sky 6 months apart. The apparent movement of the star in the two photos lets you work out how far away it is. Stars further away seem not to move as much - 10Explain why we see stars and galaxies as they were in the pastThe nearest star to us after the sun is 4.2 light years away which means we see it as it was 4.2 years ago. Other stars and galaxies are even further away which means we see them as they were even longer ago than that
- 11What is red shift? When a galaxy is moving away from us the wavelength of the light from it changes - the light becomes redder
- 12Explain the evidence that shows that the universe is expandingBy seeing how much the light has been red-shifted, you can work out how quickly it's moving.
The greater the red shift the faster its moving - 13Name the process that wears mountains downErosion
- 14Briefly explain Wegener's theory of continental driftSaid that Africa and South America had previously been one continent which had then split. He found there were matching layers in the rocks on different continents and similar fossils. He believed 300 million years ago there had been just one supercontinent.
- 15Give 3 reasons why Wegener's theory was rejected at firstIt didn't seem convincing
He was a meteorologist not a geologist
It was such a change from their original theory - 16How fast are some sea floors spreading each year?A few cm each year
- 17Briefly explain the changes you see in the magnetic orientation of sea floor rocksAs liquid magma erupts out of the gap, iron particles in rock tend to align themselves with the Earth's magnetic field and as it cools they set in position. Every 1/2 million years the Earths magnetic field swaps direction
- 18Labelled diagram of the Earth showing the crust mantle and core

- 19What causes tectonic plates to drift?Convection currents in the mantle caused by heating the core and mantle causes the plates to drift
- 20Where do most earthquakes and volcanoes occour? At the boundaries between 2 tectonic plates
Volcanoes are made by the magma which is produced and rises where the plates meet - 21How are the Himalayas being formed?India is crashing into the Eurasian plate
- 22Name the 2 types of seismic waves caused by Earthquakes state whether each type is a transverse or longitudinal waveP waves - longitudinal
S waves - transverse - 23What type of seismic waves cannot pass through liquids?S waves
- 24A labelled diagram of a wave showing the amplitude and wavelength

- 25What is the formula that relates wave speed, frequency and wave length?Speed = Frequency x Wave length
- 26Whats a transverse wave? The vibrations are at 90degrees to the direction of travel of the wave
- 27Whats a longitudinal wave? The vibrations are along the direction as the wave is travelling
