- 2Council of TrentThe purpose of the Council of Trent was to fix the Catholic Church and get rid of the corruption by dealing with the attacks by the Protestants. They also reaffirmed that Catholic ideas were right and changed some things.
- 3The Index Librorum ProhibitorumThis was a list of prohibited books for Catholics. It was established during the Council of Trent in 1559 by Pope Paul IV. The Catholic Church considered books on the Index to be harmful to faith and the morals of its followers.
- 4Ignatius Loyola and the Society of JesusIgnatius Loyola was a Spanish man who formed the religious Society of Jesus, and its followers were called the Jesuits.
- 5The InquisitionIt was a Church court that could arrest, imprison and torture people to get confessions. They put on trail the enemies of the Church, knows as heretics. The property of the heretics was confiscated when they killed the people, so they had a financial incentive.
- 6HuguenotsThe protestants in France were called this. On St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572, there was a massacre by Catherine de Mediei, the French queen.
- 7The Treaty of NatesIt was signed in 1598, and it proclaimed that protestants were allowed to practice their own religion in France
