The Multi-Store Model

Fichas del conjunto (20)
- 1—1. Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
2. A + S saw memory as process/sequence
- 2—- Info flows in fixed sequence from 1 store to other

- 3—Key Features:
-different types of memory
-called memory stores
-SM, STM, LTM
- 4—Any stimulus you come across has been in 1 or more of these stores - in sequence

- 5—WAY = ENCODING
AMOUNT = CAPACITY
TIME = DURATION
- 6—ENCODING
The way in which memory is retained
- 7—CAPACITY
How much info this store can retain
- 8—DURATION
How long this store can retain info for
- 9—How to remember things?
PAY ATTENTION TO IT - goes from SM to STM
- 10—Rehearse it - sends it from STM to LTM

- 11—RETRIEVAL - brings it from LTM to STM

- 12—SM
Collected in a study by Sperling (1960). Participants were showed a grid of digits + letters in flashes of 50 m/s
- 13—Then told to record after a tone. More letters + digits that they were told to remember, the harder it got. It shows information decays rapidly in SS

- 14—The Serial Position Effect
Support from the distinction between STM + LTM comes from Glanzer + Cunitz (1966) gave participants a list of 20 words. Presented at one time asked to recall any words they could remember. Tended to form start of list (primary effect) than end of list (recency effect). The middle was not so good
- 15—Areas of brain associated with STM and LTM
Demonstrating link between STM and LTM scanners - images of what region is active when doing different tasks. Prefrontal cartex is active when STM is engaged. Hippocampus is active when LTM is engaged.
- 16—Case Studies
HM got brain damage by operation to remove hippocampus to reduce severe epilepsy. Personality and intellect intact but no longer form any new memories. Remember everything before his surgery. Suggests hippocampus is gateway through which new memories must pass before entering permanent storage in the brain (1957)
- 17—The Sensory Store
-Constantly recieves info from external environment
-most info recieves little attention
-holds info for fractions of a second
- 18—Ear = Econic
Auditory = input from ears when you HEAR. Stored as sounds
- 19—Eye = Iconic
Stored as seen
Input from eyes when you SEE
- 20—Hand = Haptic
Tactille input from the body - things you've touched. Stored as FEELINGS
