- 1SOHO MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE CONFIGURATION SETTING?SOHO MULTIFUNCTION DEVICES
- normally what we think of as a multifunction printer. usually, a printer, scanner & fax machine, that offers features such as web printing & network connections so you can maybe connect to it over Wi-Fi but essentially, share the connection with multiple users.
- the idea is that a small office/home will not have the type of budget to go out and buy very expensive dedicated devices, more cost-effective to have all of these types of devices built into one.
- cheap small portable unit
PRINTER DRIVES:
- driver needs to be unique to the printer model(or a certain manufacturer may make a single driver that is suitable for several models)
- ensure you have the correct driver for operating systems and version-specific(Windows, macOS, Linux)
- have the right operating system types(32-bit and 64-bit), most newer devices are 64-bit - 2COLLATE/SIMPLEX/ORIENTATION SETTING?COLLATE PRINTING CONFIGURATION:
- common option is to collate for configuration(simply means how the pages are sorted when printing a multi-page document with multiple copies).
- collated has all of the pages in sequence for each copy of the document(1, 2, 3, etc)
- not collated means it prints all of page 1 for all copies, then all of page 2, and so on
- collated option is available on the device itself or driver interface
DUPLEX PRINTING:
- means to print on both sides
- paper is read from both sides it's being photocopied or printed on both sides if regular printing
- simplex means to only print on one side
- duplex can half the number of pages of simplex printing
ORIENTATION:
- may adjust the orientation and the quality
- orientation options of portrait (standard size = 8.5 horizontal & 11 vertical) & landscape(standard size is opposite)
- print quality can specify color, greyscale(or monochrome), color saving(muted colors), resolution(DPI, higher resolution = crisper) - 3EXPLAIN WIRED DEVICE SHARING?CONNECTION TYPES FOR SOHO MULTIFUNCTION DEVICES(USB):
- most common connection type
- uses standard type A connector on the computer end and type B on the device end
- ideal for a local installation where you are connecting it to a desktop computer that never moves and a device itself that never moves, so a local wired connection is more reliable
- can still make this available over a network
- if the computer hosting the device and all of your other devices are all on the same network, then your operating system will allow you to share that device(e.g. if running windows, there are features where you can run workgroup wizards or home office wizards that detects the resources that are installed on your system & makes them available to be used on other computers by joining the sam workgroup wizard)
PARALLEL AND SERIAL PRINTER CONNECTORS:
- serial connectors have 9 pins
- parallel & Centronics have 25 pins
- both connector types are color-coded blue
- serial is a much slower connection than parallel
- uncommon - 4EXPLAIN WIRED DEVICE SHARING(ETHERNET PRINTER CONNECTIONS)?ETHERNET PRINTER CONNECTORS:
- for sharing a printer
- supports networking with that device
- can then access SOHO device over network
- so can connect the printer straight to the network router
- hence don't need a dedicated local system to host the printer and then share it, simply becomes available as a device on the network for every other system that is available
- just install printer & specify the IP address of the printer as the port - 5EXPLAIN MULTIFUNCTION DEVICES OVER A WIFI CONNECTION?SOHO MULTIFUNCTION DEVICE OVER A WIFI CONNECTION:
- allows connections over standard 802.11 wireless transmissions
- has 2 modes
- infrastructure mode(means you have an access point enabled wireless network(e.g. router), the central point that allows all devices to connect to wireless network)
- support exists for all variations of 802.11, a/b/g/n or ac
- more permanent access
802.11 ad-hoc mode
- means there is no access point
- is peer-to-peer device access, meaning you don't connect the device to say a Wi-Fi router but directly to the multifunction device(e.g. printer) itself
- common in casual access(1 or 2 documents)
BLUETOOTH CONNECTION:
- wireless device technology
- used for data transmission over short distances(no more than 10 meters)
- must pair Bluetooth-enabled devices to each other before they can be used to transmit anything
- uses ad-hoc mode(device to device, no router involved for Bluetooth - 6EXPLAIN INTEGRATED PRINT SERVER CONFIGURATIONS?PRINT SERVERS:
- common in an office/network environment
- you have a single dedicated computer that handles all print jobs from every other system(single printer has multiple printers installed or attached to it)
- know the name of the server & printer to install it on the client systems & then just print over the network
- cost saving as don't need physical printers for each individual client
- can access the dedicated server over Wi-Fi or a physical cable
- if it fails, the print server is entirely unavailable & no one can print until it comes back up
INTEGRATED PRINT SERVERS:
- all the capabilities of a print server are built into the device itself or a router for wireless connections, or even wired connections, so it's not that dedicated computer that's handling all the print jobs anymore
- can print directly to the device as it handles all the queueing of jobs
- can manage jobs in the queue - 7EXPLAIN CLOUD PRINTING?CLOUD PRINTING:
- documents are saved in the cloud
- as long as you have access to the data, you can submit the print job through the cloud printing service no matter where you are
- it will submit the job down to your local printer & produce that copy for whoever needs it
- need to make sure the printer is accessible over the internet
KEY BENEFITS:
- no need for hardware Connections
- no need for drivers(as the service handles the rendering of the print job)
- ideal for use with mobile devices
- print on demand
- job sent from cloud to printer(their responsibility to contact the printer) - 8EXPLAIN SOHO DEVICE USER AUTHENTICATION?SOHO DEVICE USER AUTHENTICATION:
- dependant on make and model
- maybe a function of the way your environment is set up administratively
- involves defining users and/or groups that have particular abilities dependent on which user they are, or to which group they might belong(generally comes down to a user vs administrator)
- administrator has full permissions on a device, they can configure the settings
- a user is normally restricted to regular permissions(e.g. can not affect anyone else's prints)
HARD DRIVE CACHING:
- spooling is another aspect of printing(involves whichever system is acting as the print server, temporary storing the print job until it can actually be printed(queue)
- hard drive caching refers to the fact there is a place for a file to sit & wait
- flow chart for hard drive caching = print job, output file, print server spooler(ensures any sensitive data is deleted from spooler after the job is completed), file print - 9EXPLAIN HOW TO CLEAR THE PRINT SPOOLER IN WINDOWS?- If clearing the print spooler manually in windows, navigate to; my computer - (c:) drive - windows folder - system 32 folder - spool folder - printers folder(has one for each printer that exists on the system, then can delete from here)
- other ways to clear = go to control panel & click printer itself, which will show the queue & allow you to delete. Menu options to clear queue, services console in control panel too with a print spooler service(can restart spooler service) - 10EXPLAIN OPTIONS FOR SHARING SOHO DEVICES?VIA TPC:
- means that you are connecting to the device over a network
- transmission control protocol(TCP)
- need to specify the TCP port number(as it specifies that particular service)
- for windows devices, it's usually ports 135-139, in terms of your computer locating the device and knowing that let's say submitting a print job versus some other type of service
VIA BONJOUR:
- if it's a mac device or an Apple OS device, you can share these devices using the Bonjour protocol(which is built into mac systems and essentially enables a device discovery where the systems advertise the presence of the device so that other systems can connect to it
- supported on windows, especially if you download iTunes(which downloads & enables the Bonjour protocol) so that you can locate a device that is attached to or hosted by a Mac system
VIA AirPrint:
- built into iOS and apple operating systems
- is a Wi-Fi printing protocol as opposed to wired
- need to make sure the device is compatible with the AirPrint protocol
