- 1State the purpose of the CPU.The purpose of the CPU is to process
data. It is where all the searching,
calculating and decision making takes
place in the computer. - 2Describe the function of the CPU as fetching and executing instructions stored in memory. The first step carried out by the CPU is
fetching, This is where the CPU collects data from the main memory and then stores them in it's own internal temporary memory areas. The next thing that is done is Decoding, this is where the CPU decodes the instruction so it can then do the final step which is executing the instruction. This is where the data processing actually takes place, the instruction is carried out upon the data. Once this cycle is done the CPU sets itself up again to do another cycle. - 3Explain how common characteristics of CPUs such as clock speed, cache size and number of cores affect their performance. If the clock speed is faster it has a faster performance, however it runs hotter and consumes more power. If there is more than one core for example dual-core would have two CPU's which would both work at the same time therefore two instructions will be carried out at once. The larger the cache size, the better the performance because you are able to store more data locally.
- 4Describe the difference between RAM and ROM.RAM is a fast temporary type of memory on which programs, applications and data are stored. Once the computer looses power, all data stored in the RAM is lost. Where as ROM is memory that can not be changed by a program or user. ROM stores the instructions until the computer is started up again.
- 5Explain the need for ROM in a computer system.ROM is needed because the computer must be able to obtain instructions from the moment it is switched on and it must know some basic things about the hardware that makes up the machine.
- 6Describe the purpose of RAM in a computer system.RAM is a fast temporary type of memory on which programs, applications and data are stored. Once the computer looses power, all data stored in the RAM is lost.
- 7Explain how the amount of RAM in a personal computer affects the performance of the computer.
