- 1Introduction 1* Who are you?
* What do you do for a living?
* Who are they?
* Where do they live?
* When is their birthday? - 2Introduction 2* What brings you to see me today?
- burning/stinging
- difficulty passing
- blood present
- raised temperature
- loin pain
- genital discharge etc.
* PMH - recurrent UTI's, BPH, prostate/renal/bladder Ca, diabetes, pregnant
* Meds - recent Abx, finasteride, tamsulosin, anti-diabetics, chemo, CKD meds, rifampicin, co-beneldopa - 3Introduction 3* Explain the process - take urine sample and dip test stick into it, looking for different things in the urine
* Check urine is:
- < 2 hrs old
- washed hands before and after
- mid-stream - voided, held in, voided into pot and then remaining void in loo
- genitalia cleaned before
- foreskin fully retracted/labia separated - 4General urine check* HAVE YOU GLOVED, APRONED AND WIPED DOWN BEFORE
* Colour - level of hydration, hepatic disfunction, haematuria
* Smell - fishy, very strong, sweet smell
* Particulate matter
* Cloudiness or not
* Volume - have they been able to have a really good pee? - 5Urine dip process* Got urine dip strips and not another type of strip?
* Strips in date?
* Take one and shut the pot
* Dip all the way and then out straight away
* Wipe on collection top pot to remove excess wee
* Place on tissue and start timer
* Read off at appropriate times - 6Red flags* Glucose - hyperglycaemia, CKD
* Protein - pre-eclampsia, CKD, drug adverse effects
* Bilirubin - hepatic/biliary dysfunction
* Urobillinogen - hepatic dysfunction, haemolytic anaemia
* Ketones - ketoacidosis, starvation
* Specific gravity - DI, dehydration
* Blood - infection, bladder Ca
* pH - ketoacidosis, kidney stones, infection
* Nitrites - infection
* Leukocytes - infection
