Network Flashcards
Fichas del conjunto (29)
- 1What is authentication?Only allowing those who are supposed to access something to access it. Usually username and password, can be biometric too, or key cards, ect.
- 2What is encryption? To encrypt a file is to make it unreadable by changing all of the contents. Must be encrypted/decrypted with the encryption key, and you cannot decrypt it without the key.
- 3What is a firewall?A piece of software that checks all incoming traffic for malware, and only allows good traffic in. Can be installed on the router or on the device.
- 4Who is MAC address filtering?A MAC address is an address separately assigned to each computer. Cannot be changed, is unique to that device.
- 5What is CAPTCHA?A Completely Automated Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. Used to do exactly that.
- 6What is a LANLocal Area Network. Connects computers. Usually owned by onw person or organisation, for one building.
- 7What is a PAN?Personal Area Network. Usually 10m range, such as Bluetooth.
- 8What is a WAN?Wide area network, connects many LANs. The internet is a WAN.
- 9WirelessWired connection to a server box. Easier to secure, but less flexible. Faster connection.
- 10Star topologyAll connect to server box directly. More expensive, and server box can get very hot, but faster once set up.
- 11Bus topologyCheaper to set up, and server box doesn't overheat and die (usually). Have to wait for a break in communications to transmit, so slower. If one wire breaks it all dies.
- 12WirelessConnect to a wireless access point via Wi-Fi. Slower, and less reliable signal, and harder to secure, but much more flexible as computers can move, and you don't have to buy and install wires.
- 13Copper WireCan't run underwater, vulnerable to EMP, slow. But cheap.
- 14EthernetA standard for wired networks. Much better than copper wire, and barely more expensive. Can still fail due to water, or strong magnets.
- 15Fibre OpticsReflects light around the cable. Super fast, invulnerable to environment. Very expensive.
- 16TCPTransmission Control Protocol. Transport layer, transmission between routers.
- 17HTTPHyperText Transfer Protocol. Allows client to request and deliver HTML (HyperText Markup Language) files to servers. HTML is the standard for web pages. Application layer.
- 18HTTPSHyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. Encrypts and authorises client-server communications. Application layer.
- 19IMAPInternet Message Access Protocol. Used by clients to access mail from a mail server, and access remote mailboxes. Application layer.
- 20SMTPSimple Mail Transfer Protocol. Sends mail to a mail server. Application layer.
- 21FTPFile Transfer Protocol. Sends files between computers. Uploads web pages and associated files to web servers for hosting. Application layer.
- 22UDPUser Datagram Protocol. Sends files between computers. Uploads web pages and associated files to web servers for hosting. Application layer.
- 23IPInternet Protocol. Provides the route for packets on a WAN. Transport layer.
- 24NICNetwork Interface Controller/Card. For wired connection, has the ethernet port. Link layer.
- 25Why layer?Decomposes the problem, different hard/software can be made specifically for different levels, and things from different developers can be compatible.
- 26Application LayerContains communications protocols, and interface methods used by hosts in networks.
- 27Transport LayerLinks the application layer to the network, establishes connection.
- 28Internet LayerAccepts and delivers packets for the network. Also addresses packets before they are sent.
- 29Link LayerManages hardware. Only works when the device is physically connected to the network. Twisted pair copper wire, ethernet, and optical fibre uses this.
