  1. 1Indicatiosprevention
    rehabilitation
    improve proprioception
  2. 2Prevention• Measure in high risk activities
    ⇨ ankle in basketball
  3. 3Rehabiliatation• protective mechanism during healing and rehab process
  4. 4Improve proprioceptiondue to skin contact of tape
compression especially around ankle (fat pad)
  5. 5Improve performance• assist muscle contracture – elastic
    • improve confidence
  6. 6Evidence• no effctive for primary injury prevention of
    ⇒ knee, shoulder, elbow, spine
    • evidenct suggest that MAY prevent re-injuries for pt. With previous ankle sprain
  7. 7Taping typesrigid vs. flexible
  8. 8Rigid type features• many different types & thicknessess
  9. 9Goal• restrict undesired motion
  10. 10Good tape sould have• adhesive
    • strong
    • non-irritant
    • easily torn – Looks good in front of pt. (perforated edges)
  11. 11Preparation• pt in comfortable position
    • provide support, don’t restrict movment needed for activity
    • injured lig. Held in shortened position
    • non injured lig. Held in neutral position
    • !!!!shave body hair!!!!
  12. 12Preparation cont.⇒ clean skin to remove grease & sweat (friars balsam, optionally alcohol wipe)
⇒ use under-wrap is allergy to adhesives (hypofix0)_
    ⇒use appropriate width
⇒ take care with non-stretch tape around swollen joints & across dorsum of foot
  13. 13Application• various techniques
    • use anchor proximaly & distally
    • unroll tape before application
    • apply even pressure
    • overlap by ½ to ensure strength and even application
    • smooth out folds and prevent creases
    • if discomfort is present, readjust
  14. 14Removal• use vegetable oil or eucalyptus oil is better than water
    • if area itchy, remove tape
  15. 15Contra indications• allergy to adhesives
    • infection present
    • frail skin (elderly_)
    • neurological and circulatory issues
  16. 16Treatment directed testing (TDT)• Vincenzino (2004)
-> foot orthoses in treatment of lower limb conditions: a MSK physiotherpy perspective Manual therapy
-> clinical relevancy? used prefab orthotics for reseach.....
  17. 17Augmented Low Dye Taping Indication• Pain and dysfunction with abnormal pronation
    (excessive & prolonged)
  18. 18Position• Moderately supinated the rearfoot with neutral forefoot
  19. 19Tape• 38 mm rigid
depending on foot type & size
  20. 20Technique includes- spur
    - Mini stirrups
    - Spur lock off
    - Reverse sixes
    - Calcaneal sling
    - Lock off tape
  21. 21Spur• runs from medial to lateral metatarsal phalangeal joint line
-> try to PF 1st ray
  22. 22Mini stirrups• commence lateral plantar foot
    • course underneath foot
    • finish at medial side
    • 4-6 stirrups are applied
  23. 23Spur lock off• covers ends of min-stirrups
  24. 24Reverse sixes• apply anchor strap around leg
⇒ ¼ to 1/3 wary to proximal ankle
    ⇒ start at medial malleoli
⇒ run across front of ankle to lateral midfoot
⇒ under plantar midfoot and then rup up medial side of foot to anchor strap
    (cover navicular and sust. Tali)
    • 3 are required
  25. 25Calcaneal sling• anterior aspect of distal leg (at anchor strap)
    • course distally and plantarly to warp obliquely about achilles and heel
    • then warpping beneath foot
    ⇒ 2 required
  26. 26Lock off tapesame as anchor
  27. 27Low dye x-arch/copelandsanchor
    X's
    Mini stirrups
  28. 28Anchor• plantar PMA region (medial to lateral)
  29. 29X’s• from PMA 1
    • course plantarly towards heel
    • wrap around heel and return to PMA 1
    • do this for all met heads
  30. 30Mini stirrups• lateral to medial starting at mid heel
    • working towards PMA region
    • should cover all X’s
-> build supinatory moment till navicular
-> build PF force from 1st ray onwards
  31. 31Patella taping Mc Connell• pt relaxed with knee flexed over foam roller
    • push knee cap towards medial aspect and hold with tape
    • skin wrinkles OK
  32. 32Elastic tapingKinesio taping
  33. 33Kinesio taping• tape allows unidirectional elasticity of up to 60% of resting length
    • 1st used over 25 yrs ago in Japan (Dr. Kenzo Kase)
    • variety of colours
    • used in variety of activities
  34. 34Application• either influence muscle facilitation or inhibition (theoretically)
  35. 355 physiological responses1. skin function
    2. circulatory/lymph
    3. Fascia
    4. muscle
    5. Joint
  36. 36skin function• gentle sensory stimulation during movment
  37. 37Circulatory• elastic properties cause gentle massage movment
    • opens closes lymphatic vessels
  38. 383. Fascia• minimize fascial contraction during soft tissue injury
  39. 394. muscle• replicates and enhances function of muslce
  40. 405. Joint• Stimulate proprioception
  41. 41Research by Chen• Tape change in timing of VMO
    • Imrpove ratio of VMO/VL for mechanism of efficacy
  42. 42Halseth• Checked effects of Kinesio taping on proprioception
    • Does NOT appear to enhance proprioception
