About Electrotherapy and Physical Agents
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
This unit is about physical agents used in physiotherapy: heat and cold, ultrasound, shortwave diathermy, laser and light, and electrical stimulation. The mind maps are the largest group. They include Therapeutic Heat & Cold, Infra red radiation, Shortwave Diathermy, Electrotherapeutic Currents, Premodulated (PreMod) Current and Neuromuscular Stimulation. There are also maps on dry needling, cryotherapy and microcurrent in fracture healing.
Where to start
Begin with the slide set Introduction to Therapeutic Physical Agents. It sets out the definition of physical agents and the learning aims for an introductory electrotherapy topic. Then open the mind map Therapeutic Heat & Cold, which covers temperature regulation, the hypothalamus and the physical mechanisms of heat exchange, such as conduction.
Using quizzes, maps and flashcards together
Read a map first, then test yourself. The quiz Modalities Chapter 1 & 2 Quiz opens with questions on pain and how the body responds to it. The quiz modalities extra questions uses practical scenarios, such as a patient describing what she feels during electrical stimulation. After a quiz, go back to the map for any topic that tripped you up.
Flashcards suit short recall. Use Ultrasound Flashcards for terms like attenuation and intensity, Shortwave Diathermy Flashcards for what diathermy means, and Thermal Agents Flashcards for conduction modalities.
A technique outside the electrical topics
The map Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation is a good change of pace. It covers the 10 basic principles and manual contacts, including the lumbrical grip. It helps if you are moving between modalities and hands-on treatment techniques.
Where this unit sits
This page belongs to the Therapeutic Interventions strand of Physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The resources were made by GoConqr users, so check them against your own course materials. Pick one agent, such as ultrasound, and work through its map, flashcards and quiz in turn.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the slide set Introduction to Therapeutic Physical Agents. It defines physical agents and lists what students should be able to do by the end of the topic. After that, the Therapeutic Heat & Cold mind map is a clear next step before you try a quiz.
What do the mind maps cover?
The mind maps cover heat and cold, infra red radiation, ultrasound, shortwave diathermy, laser and light therapy, dry needling and cryotherapy. Several others focus on electrical stimulation, including PreMod current, neuromuscular stimulation, interference current and microcurrent in fracture healing. There is also a map on proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so it is sensible to compare them with your course notes. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own materials.
Who are these resources suited to?
They suit university students and professional candidates studying electrotherapy and physical agents, and teachers who want ready-made material. The quizzes include final exam style sets such as Physical Agents I Comprehensive Final Exam and Therapeutic Modalities Exam 1, which work well for checking your recall.
Which quizzes can I use to test myself?
There are over 10 quizzes. Modalities Chapter 1 & 2 Quiz starts with pain and responses to it. Modalities extra questions uses patient scenarios, and Ultrasound Quiz focuses on one agent. Physical Agents final gives you a broader check once you have worked through the maps.
What if I cannot find the topic I need?
Try the related titles on this page first, since some topics appear under different names, such as electroestimulation and Electrotherapeutic Currents. If something is still missing, you can build your own mind map, flashcards or quiz with a free account and fill the gap yourself.
