  1. 1What are the three types of processing?-Batch
    -Interactive
    -Transaction
  2. 2What is batch processing? In modern ICT systems in the digital world a batch job is where data is collected together in a group or batch before processing takes place. While running the program there is no interaction between computer and user. This allows for over night jobs to be completed using spare capacity in the ICT system. Backing up is fairly simple and can be done after each new job is run.
E.g. A payroll system- all the wages are calculated and the payslips are output.
E.g. Power supply bills for customers- readings are grouped together in a batch and then processed when all of the readings have been taken. This may take place every evening and produce the final bill for customers at the end of a given time period.
Batch processing is best suited to regular jobs that happen at scheduled times and involved large quantities of data, such as the examples given. Because of the time available, batch processing tends to have strong error-checking features built in, and so the information produced tends to be extremely accurate.
  3. 3What is interactive processing? In this type of processing there is interaction between the ICT system and the user. The user reacts to prompts from the computer and the computer uses these prompts to process data. Many computer systems in the modern world work this way.
E.g. A student queries their record in the college library database to see if they have exceeded the maximum number of books they can take out. The reply comes up on screen immediately which means they know whether or not they can take out another book.
As can be seen from the above example the interaction occurs in real time and the input-process-output is controlled by the user.
-The computer is available to receive the input from the user.
-The data is processed at the time it is input and output is also immediate.
  4. 4What is transaction processing?Transaction processing allows many users to access and update a system at apparently the same time. Each transition must be completed before the next transaction is begun. The main aim of a transaction processing system is to be able to work quickly with a large amount of different transactions taking place, sometimes from many different users. You or your family may be familiar with online transaction processing systems or when purchasing cinema tickets using the ICT booking system.
E.g. Passengers may make enquiries at travel agents anywhere in the world to find out if a seat is free on any of the flights operated by airline. Passengers require immediate up-to-date information. The travel agent can make online contact with the main travel company, giving the agent and customer access to the flight information and booking file held on the main computer.
