Bones and Cartilage
Fichas del conjunto (10)
- 1DiaphysisThe shaft of the bone.
- 2EpiphysisA cartilage growth plate at the end of the bone - epiphyseal line.
- 3MetaphysisBetween the diaphysis and the epiphysis, where growth occurs.
- 4PeriosteumTough membrane covering bone but not the cartilage.
Contains bone forming cells that enable an increase in thickness. - 5Medullary CavityContains yellow bone marrow - energy store
- 6Articular CartilageHyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis where joints are formed - decrease friction and enables smooth movement.
- 7OsteoclastsFormed from the fusion of 50 monocytes and has ruffles and found in the endosteum.
These degrade bone using powerful lysosomal enzymes and acids during bone remodeling or when there is a decrease in blood calcium. - 8OsteocytesMature bone cells that no longer secrete matrix. They become trapped in bone matrix.
They maintain the cellular cavities in bone- exchange nutrients and waste between bone blood. - 9OsteoblastsBone forming cells.
- 10Osteoprogenitor cellsUnspecialised stem cells derived from mesenchyme that give rise to bone forming cells, osteoblasts.
Found in the inner layer of periosteum and endosteum.
