- 1Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and Neutrons are found in the nucleus, orbiting the core is the electrons.Proton - Positive +1 charge, relative mass =1.
Neutron - Neutral - 0, relative mass =1.
Electron - negative -1 charge, relative mass = 0.0005 - 2Proton number is the number of protons in the nucleus. In a neutral atom the number of electrons equals the number of protons. The nucleon number is the total number of protons and neutrons.Isotopes have the same proton number but different nucleon number as there is a change in amount of neutrons within the atom. The number of neutrons affects the stability of the nucleus. The greater the number of neutrons to the number of protons the more unstable the nucleus is. Unstable nuclei may be radioactive and decay to make themselves stable.
