Exploring Our Solar System
Fichas del conjunto (18)
- 1What does the universe consist of?Planets, comets and meteors.
Stars.
Galaxies (large groups of stars).
Black holes (dense, dead stars, with a strong gravitational field). - 2What does our solar system consist of?It is made up of the sun, surrounded by planets, comets and satellites. The moon is a natural satellite that orbits the Earth.
- 3What do comets have a core of? What are they bigger than? What is their diameter up to?A core of frozen gas and dust.
Comets are bigger than meteors.
They are up to 20km in diameter. - 4What is the planets path around the sun called, what shape are they?Orbits, which are slightly squashed circles (ellipses).
- 5How are planets, comets and satellites kept in orbit by?The gravitational force.
- 6Smaller objects orbit larger objects, how do they stay in their orbits? The larger object exerts an inward pull force on them. This inward pull force is due to gravity and is called the centripetal force.
- 7What is a light year? What is the constant speed of light? It is the distance that light travels in a year. The light year is a useful unit for measuring astronomical distances.
Its constant speed is 300,000,000 m/s. - 8What are the difficulties facing a manned space mission?Planets are very far away so it takes months, or years to reach them.
Fuel required, takes up most of spacecraft.
Room must be found to store enough food, oxygen and water.
A stable artificial atmosphere must be maintained in space craft.
keeping warm is vital.
Humans need shielding from cosmic rays when outside Earth's magnetic field.
low gravity affects peoples health.
Radio signals carrying messages take a long time to reach home - 9Why is unmanned space travel better than manned?able to withstand lethal conditions.
they would not require food, water or oxygen. - 10What can probes be used for to send back information to Earth?Temperature.
Magnetic field.
Radiation levels.
Gravity.
Atmosphere.
Surrounding landscape.
But they cannot bring back samples for analysis. - 11How does a probe send messages back to Earth?By using radio waves that travel at the speed of light.
- 12Why does an unmanned spacecraft have to have a high reliability?Because there will be no-one to fix any breakdowns, and instruments require zero maintenance.
- 13What is a natural satellite?Anything that orbits anything else that is not man made.
- 14What are the two types of manmade satellites?Geostationary and polar orbit.
- 15What does a geostationary satellite do?Looks at the same point on Earth.
Means the satellite stays above the same point on Earth.
Takes 24h to orbit Earth.
Has the fastest speed out of the 2 orbits.
Is the furthest out from the Earth's surface. - 16What does a polar orbit satellite do?Orbits the poles of the Earth.
Takes around 100 mins to orbit Earth.
Has the slowest speed of the 2 orbits.
Is the closest to the Earth's surface.
Does not look at the samepoint on Earth. - 17What is a geostationary satellite used for?Local weather.
Communication.
GPS.
Observation. - 18What is a polar satellite used for?Global weather.
Spy.
Observation.
