About Earth in Space
GoConqr OriginalWhat the resources cover
This unit is about how Earth moves and what that does to the sky above us. The core ideas are rotation, revolution, the tilt of the axis, day and night, the four seasons, and the Moon's phases and eclipses. Wider mind maps and decks place Earth in the Solar System and the Universe.
The resources come in several formats. Mind maps are the biggest group, flashcard decks come next, and there are also quizzes, slide sets and notes. All were made by GoConqr users, so the style varies from one resource to the next.
Where to start
Begin with the mind map Day, Night and Seasons. It links the Sun's apparent path across the sky with the four seasons in a few branches. Then open the slide set Earth's Rotation & Orbit, which defines words like axis, rotate and orbit. Knowing these terms makes everything else easier to read.
If you want a short written explanation, try the note Tides, Seasons, and the Moon. It explains that the tilt of Earth's axis causes the seasons, while Earth's rotation causes day and night.
Going further
When the basics feel steady, move to the mind map Apparent Motion of the Celestial Bodies. It covers the apparent path of the Sun, proof of rotation and Foucault's Pendulum. Students working toward GCSE Physics can use the flashcard deck GCSE Physics P7 (OCR) - Astronomy, which asks about sidereal days and how the Sun, stars and Moon seem to travel. Another deck covers threats to Earth, such as asteroids, comets and near-Earth objects.
For the Moon and eclipses, look at the mind map Eclipses and the Moon and the note Note on Phases of the Moon.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first, then close it and take a quiz. Try Summer Solstice Quick Check for a short test on the seasons, or The Solar System for a wider check. Note the questions you miss, go back to the matching branch of the map, and try again a day later. Flashcards suit short, frequent sessions, such as definitions of axis, year and season.
Where this unit sits
Earth in Space belongs to the strand Earth, Moon and Sun within Astronomy. It is the place to build a clear picture of Earth's movements before moving on to other topics.
Pick a map that matches what you are learning now, work through it, and see how much you can answer from memory.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Open the mind map Day, Night and Seasons. It shows in a few branches how Earth's movement leads to day, night and the four seasons. After that, the slide set Earth's Rotation & Orbit gives you the key words, such as axis and orbit, so the other resources are easier to follow.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
What do the mind maps on this page cover?
There are more than 60 mind maps. They cover day and night, the seasons, rotation and revolution, the Moon and eclipses, and Earth's features. Others look at the Solar System and the Universe. Some are simple and suit younger learners, while others go into the apparent motion of the Sun and stars.
Is there anything for GCSE Physics?
Yes. The flashcard deck GCSE Physics P7 (OCR) - Astronomy asks about how the Sun, stars and Moon appear to move and about the sidereal day. There is also a deck on threats to Earth, such as asteroids and comets. Check them against your own course before relying on them.
Who are these resources for?
They suit school students going over a topic, primary pupils learning about day, night and seasons, and teachers looking for ready-made material. Most resources are aimed at secondary level, and a sizeable share suits primary. Over 110 contributors have added to the collection.
What can I do if the topic I need is missing?
Try a nearby title first. Eclipses, the Moon and the Solar System each have their own maps, decks and quizzes. If you still can't find what you need, you can build your own mind map or flashcard deck on the exact point you want to cover.
