- 1List two different leisurely activities enjoyed in Pompeii and Herculaneum, and outline their main features.1. Theatre was a commonality, in which pantomime, mime, and Vaudeville were popular amongst the poor; whilst Greek comedy and tragedy was popular amongst the elite.
2. Gladiatorial combat was celebrated, where men would mostly fight animals (e.g. bears and lions). - 2Outline four features of health in Pompeii and Herculaneum.1. Exercise was common, in which it was practised in the 'palaestra'.
2. A great amount of dental problems due to poor hygiene.
3. People favoured magic and healing herbs.
4. People regularly bathed in public baths (e.g. the Stabian baths in Pompeii) - 3Describe three features of sanitation and water distribution in Pompeii and Herculaneum.1. Underground sewage systems and cesspits were used to limit sewage influx.
2. Public wells were made in the streets for widespread use.
3. Aqueducts built in order to disburse water to public fountains, baths, pools, and private homes. - 4—A 'thermopolium', which was like a Roman snack bar. 200 are present in Pompeii, while 1 has been found in Herculaneum opposite the palaestra.
- 5Outline the regular diet present in Pompeii and Herculaneum.1. Mt. Vesuvius' rich soil was ideal for farming crops (e.g. barley, figs, and olives)
2. Wine was regularly drunk from amphorae
3. The regular meal for the lower classes was boiled porridge, whilst the upper and middle classes enjoyed large meals of meats, cheeses etc.
