Fichas del conjunto (27)
- 1ErosionThe wearing away of material by a moving force e.g. water
- 2AbrasionCoast: The flinging of small pieces of sediment against the cliff
River: The carrying of sediment across rocks - 3AttritionWhere two rocks knock into each other and knock the corners off
- 4Corrasion (coastline only)Where large rocks are flung at the coast
- 5Hydraulic action/power (cavitation)Water is forced into cracks, compressing the air inside them and causing it to explode out of the crack
- 6CorrosionSoluble rocks e.g. chalk are dissolved by the water
- 7WeatheringThe breaking down of rock in-situ by the weather and other factors
- 8Mechanical weatheringDisintegration/breakup of rocks
- 9Freeze-thaw1. Water seeps into cracks in the rocks
2. Water freezes overnight, expanding and widening the cracks
3. Water melts and freezes the next night, widening the crack further
4. Rock breaks off and collects as scree at the bottom of the cliff - 10Chemical weatheringRainwater is slightly acidic and dissolves more soluble rocks e.g. chalk
- 11Biological weatheringPlants grow and force their roots into cracks in the rocks, widening them
Animals burrow into the rock face, breaking it apart - 12TransportationThe movement of sediment from one place to another
- 13TractionThe rolling of large rocks along the sea/river bed
- 14SaltationThe force of the water causes rock to 'bounce' along the bed of the sea or river
- 15SuspensionWhere material floats in the river/sea and is carried along with it
- 16SolutionSediment is dissolved in the river/sea
- 17Bed loadThe sediment transported by a river through traction and saltation
- 18Suspended loadThe sediment transported by a river through suspension
- 19Dissolved loadThe material transported by a river through solution
- 20Longshore drift (coast only)1. Waves carry material obliquely up the beach
2. Waves retreat perpendicular to the beach, carrying the material back down
3. The process repeats, and the material is gradually moved up the beach - 21Deposition (coast)Deposition occurs in sheltered areas when waves no longer have enough energy to carry the material
- 22Deposition (rivers)When a river loses energy, it cannot carry all the sediment it has and 'drops' some of it. Most of this happens in estuaries, where vast mudflats often form
- 23Mass MovementThe downward movement or sliding of material under the influence of gravity
- 24RockfallRocks break off the edge of a cliff and fall down a slope, colecting as scree at the base of the cliff
- 25LandslideBlocks of rock break off and flow down a slope, breaking up as they do
- 26MudflowSoil and loose rock become saturated, lose grip and flow downhill
- 27Rotational slip/slumpSaturated soil and weak rock form slumps along a curved surface
