- 1What is the purpose of RAMRandom Access Memory is the place in a computer where all the programs and data that are currently in use are stored. This is so the computer to quickly access them.
- 2Characteristics of RAM1. Fast, quick to read a write to.
2. Volatile, does not retain data whilst the machine is off. - 3What is the purpose of ROMRead-Only Memory contains the programs that allow your computer to 'boot up'.
- 4Characteristics of ROM1. Non-volatile, it's contents remain permanently in the memory even when the computer loses power.
2. Cannot be written to by the computer only read. - 5RAM vs ROMRAM:
- Stores programs and data currently in use
- Can be written to and from
- Volatile
- Larger in memory capacity
- Contents lost when computer turned
off
ROM:
- Stores the programs needed to boot up the computer
- Can only be read from
- Non-volatile
- Smaller in memory capacity
- Contents not lost when computer
turned off - 6What is Flash MemoryFlash memory is a type of non-volatile memory. It is described as a Solid-state Storage Device (SSD) as it has not moving parts.
Flash memory is made up of cells that contain storage transistors, which contain logic gates. Electrons and positive and negative charges are used to write and erase data to and from flash memory. - 7Pros and Cons of Flash MemoryPros:
- More durable that a hard disk as it has no moving parts -
- It is quicker to write to as it does not need the device to warm up -
- Smaller in size than a hard drive -
Cons:
- It can only be written and read from a set number of times -
- It is expensive to manufacture - - 8What is Virtual MemoryVirtual memory is a feature of the operating system. It allows the hard disk to act as an extension of the RAM, by allowing sections of data to be store din the hard disk. The OS will temporarily move pages of the data to be stored in the hard disk while it is not using them. This slows the computer system as accessing data from the hard disk is much slower than accessing the from RAM.
- 9PagingPaging is the process by which the OS moves the data back to the RAM and storing further pages in the hard disk.
- 10Why we need virtual memoryIf a computer did not have virtual memory it would need to shut the applications to open others, there would not be enough room in RAM for many applications and files to open at once.
- 11What is secondary storagesecondary storage refers to any storage (either internal or external to a computer) that is not under direct control of the CPU.
A computer system needs secondary storage to store data long term. There are three types of secondary storage: Optical, Magnetic, Solid State. - 12Optical StorageOptical storage uses a lens and a light beam to read and write data onto a disk. CDs - 700MB
DVDs - 4.7 GB
Blu-rays - 50GB - 13Advantages of Optical Storage- Portable -
- Cheap to manufacture -
- Fairly durable -
- Some formats cannot be overwritten - - 14Disadvantages of Optical Storage- Capacity is relatively small compared to other storage devices -
- Requires a special drive to read/write that data to and from a disk - - 15Magnetic storageMagnetic storage devices use magnets to record data on rotating metal plates. One example would be a Hard Disk Drive.
- 16Advantages of Magnetic Storage- Large capacity -
- Fast access to read and write data -
- Fairly cheap to manufacture - - 17Disadvantages of Magnetic Storage- Data can be lost or altered by magnetic field or mechanical problems.
-Can suffer wear and tear due to moving parts. - 18Advantages of Solid-state storage-Fast boot up due to no moving parts.
-very compact
-large storage capacity
-more robust. - 19Disadvantages of Solid-state storage-Expensive to manufacture
-Limited number of times data can be read and written but can be millions of times
