  1. 1What does homogeneous mean? All the substances involved in the reaction are in the same phase (state).
  2. 2What does it mean in terms of reactant and products when a system is in equilibrium?Rate of the fwd reaction = rate of reverse reaction and concentrations remain constant.
  3. 3Dynamicmeaning the reaction is still continuing.
  4. 4What is the formula for Kc (equilibrium constant)?Kc = [C]^c [D]^d/[A]^a [B]^b
  5. 5Closed systemA system where neither matter nor energy can be lost or gained.
  6. 6Le Chatelier's principleIf a dynamic equilibrium is disturbed by changing the conditions, the position of equilibrium moves to counteract the change.
  7. 7Effect of changing pressure (on gaseous reactions)Increasing pressure will move the position of equilibrium towards the side with less volume (fewer moles). If moles are the same on both sides then increasing or decreasing pressure has no effect on position of equilibrium.
  8. 8Effect of changing temperatureVaries depending upon whether reaction is exothermic or endothermic. If exothermic, a lower temperature causes more products to be formed. If endothermic, then increasing temperature will shift position of equilibrium in favour of producing more products.
  9. 9Effect of catalyst on position of equilibriumHas no effect on position of equilibrium however it affects the rate at which the position of equilibrium is achieved. A catalyst will lower the activation energy of a reaction and increase the rates of both the fwd and reverse reactions equally.
  10. 10Optimum conditions for the Haber processHigh pressure (200atm), low temperature (450oC) and Fe catalyst used.
  11. 11Optimum conditions for contact processHigh pressure (2 atm), low temperature (450oC), Vanadium (V) oxide catalyst used.
