  1. 1How do you calculate power?Power = Voltage x Current
  2. 2How do you calculate the cost of electricity?Cost = Number of kWh x Cost per kWh
  3. 3How do you calculate the energy transferred?Energy Transferred = Power (kWh) x Time (hours)
  4. 4Define renewable.The will never run out.
  5. 5What does non-renewable mean? They will all run out one day. Usually a finite resource.
  6. 6Name the non renewable resources.Solar, wave-energy, wind, biofuels, hydro-electric, tidal and geothermal.
  7. 7Name the non-renewable energy resources.Fossil Fuels (gas and coal) and nuclear.
  8. 8How do you calculate efficiency?Useful Energy Transferred
    ------------------------------------------
    Total Energy Supplied
    X 100 = %
  9. 9Advantage and disadvantage of Nuclear?Only a small amount of a radioactive source and produce masses of energy.
But we are running out of space to put the waste and it is dangerous to dispose of.
  10. 10Advantages and disadvantages of Wind?Dependant on weather. Does not produce any green house gases.
  11. 11Advantage and disadvantage of solar?Dependant on weather and expensive but does no damage to the environment.
  12. 12Advantage and disadvantage of Wave? Not good for providing energy on a large scale but good for small islands. Minimal running cost.
  13. 13Advantage and disadvantage of Tidal?Quite reliable as they happen 2X a day. Initial costs are moderately high.
  14. 14Anything that supplies electricity is also supplying what?Energy.
  15. 15What are the primary sources of energy?Kinetic, chemical, thermal, electrical, nuclear, elastic, gravitational potential and sound.
  16. 16What happens when an electric current is passed through a component (or device)? The energy is transferred from the power supply to the component and/or to the environment.
  17. 17A 1kWh hairdryer is connected to a 230V supply. Find the current that it draws.1000 divided by 230 = 4.3 A
  18. 18What are domestic electricity meters measure? The energy transfer in kilowatt hours.
  19. 19If a light bulb is 5% efficient, if 1000J of energy is given out then how much is wasted?5% = 1000 divided by ?? so...
    1000 divided by 0.05 = 20,000J
    so energy wasted is 20,000 - 1000 = 19,000
  20. 20How do you waste less energy in your own home?Install a cavity wall and loft insulation and double glazing and draught proofing to stop heat escaping. Buying efficient light bulbs. Sharing a lift to work. Public transport.
  21. 21How do the government reduce energy waste?Invest in alternative energy sources. Improving recycling services. Making laws to ensure new housing and businesses are built energy efficient.
  22. 22Why is electricity convenient?Because it is easily transmitted over distances and can be used in many different ways.
  23. 23How do most power stations work?By creating heat and then using the heat to heat water into steam which then turns a turbine that turns a generator that converts the kinetic energy to electrical energy.
  24. 24What does the generator do/ produce?A voltage across a coil of wire by spinning a magnet near it. The bigger the current supplied by the generator, the more primary fuel it uses up every second.
  25. 25What is irradiation?Bing exposed to a radiation without coming into contact with the source. The damage to your body stops as soon as you leave the area. This means you are exposed for a short period of time.
  26. 26What is contamination?Picking up some waste or consuming it or getting it on your skin. You'll still be exposed to the radiation once you've left the area. Contamination is worse because it leaves people exposed to ionizing damage for long periods of time.
