  1. 1Give some examples of Operating SystemsAndroid OS
    OS X (Apple MACs)
    iOS (iPhone/iPad)
    MS-DOS and Windows
Google Chrome OS (based on Linux)
    Linux
    Unix
  2. 2What is an OS?Software that manages a computer’s hardware and provides a user interface
  3. 3What is MUMPS?Memory Management
    User Interface
    Multi-Tasking
    Peripheral Management
    Security
  4. 4What is a user interface?A user interface is simply what the user will see. It should allow them to actually use the hardware. The interface lets the user give commands, ask questions and displays a response
  5. 5What is a command line? The interface is text based – not graphical.
The user must know what the commands are and what they do in a lot of detail.
It does not use a lot of memory.
  6. 6what is multi-tasking?Running more than one program at the same time. It appears to be able to run several at once but actually it switches, very quickly, between processes, working on each for a split second in turn.
  7. 7What might a scheduler allocate?Shortest job first
Round robin – all jobs get equal time
    First come first serve
    Priorities
  8. 8What are peripherals?Peripherals are all the devices outside of the CPU. Includes input and output devices, secondary storage. The access speed of these is relatively slow
  9. 9what do peripherals manage?Getting input and sending output
Copying files from disk to main memory
Copy data files back to secondary storage
  10. 10what happens when you plug a peripheral into the computer?the computer will first of all check to see if it has the right kind of software to run that peripheral. If the operating system can detect the peripheral and the driver to run it, it will give you a message that it is ready to be used
  11. 11what security features might an OS contain?Anti-virus
    A firewall
    Password facilities
    Access rights
  12. 12what does an anti-virus protect against?guards against malicious software.
  13. 13what does a firewall protect against?to protect against both software and remote hackers.
  14. 14what are applications?Applications are programs written to carry out a specific task or set of tasks
  15. 15what are the types of application software?Utility programs
    Integrated
    Specific
    Bespoke
  16. 16give some examples of utility programsvirus scanners, disk defragmenters and backup utilities.
  17. 17what is an integrated software?a collection of software that has a common set of commands/icons. They tend to be cheaper than purchasing each application separately.
  18. 18what is a specific software?software written for a defined purpose. Accountancy software is a good example of this that can be bought by anyone.
  19. 19what is a bespoke software?written when a company requires a piece of software to perform a very specific task or function and there's no existing software that does what they need. It can be very expensive.
