- 1Tensions at PotsdamBritain and US denied Stalin a naval base in the Mediterranean as they saw no need for it but Stalin saw it as them not trusting him. Stalin wanted to cripple Germany further with reparations but USA and Britain didn't want to as they had seen the effects of this (WW1) but this made Stalin suspicious. Stalin set up Communist gov. in Lublin, the capital of Poland - made Truman and Atlee worried.
- 2DisagreementsPoland - Stalin wanted the border moved westward which they agreed on but weren't happy. To compensate, Stalin agreed to not support Communist rebels in Greece.
- 3Potsdam Conference, July to August 19452 months after the war in Europe ended. In April, FDR had died so was succeeded by Harry Truman. More anti-Communist and suspicious of Stalin. Clement Atlee also took over Churchill in a general election. After Germany surrendered on 8 May 1945, UK and USA reduced their forces in Europe, unlike USSR. Stalin ignored protests of creation of Communist Poland. The atom bomb of July 1945 started an arms race
- 4AgreementsNazi Party was to be banned and its leaders tried as war criminals. The Oder-Neisse line (two rivers) would be the future border between Poland and Germany.
- 5BackgroundAimed to discuss challenges that the defeat of Germany would create: what to do with Germany and the leaders, occupied countries, how to end the war with Japan and how to maintain the peace.
- 6Yalta Conference, February 1945Churchill, FDR and Stalin got on well - agreed on the quad division of Germany and Berlin into USSR, USA, Britain and France zones. The Eastern European countries would hold free elections to decide their governors and the USSR would join the war against Japan in return for parts of Manchuria and Sakhalin Island.
