  1. 1Autonomous SystemsBetter known as "Agents"
  2. 26 Properties of Autonomous Systems1. Environment: They live in one.
    2. Observation: Agents observe env.
    3. Knowledge: Agents maintain env know.
    4. Decisions: They make decisions.
    5. Act: They act in the environment.
    6. Communication: they communicate.
  3. 35 Ongoing Computing Trends1. Ubiquity
    2. Interconnection
    3. Intelligence
    4. Delegation
    5. Human-Orientation
  4. 4UbiquityProcessing power becomes cheaper and cheaper and is now found in more and more places. (Washing machines, toys, etc.)
  5. 5InterconnectionComputer systems are networked. Most notably, the internet.
  6. 6IntelligenceComputers are more and more advanced and can solve complex tasks.
  7. 7DelegationWe are delegating more and more tasks to computers, even high-risk ones like landing a plane.
  8. 8Human OrientedComputing is going from machine focused low level languages to high level human focused (easier for humans to read) languages. We interact with computers in a different way now, like swiping and touch screens.
  9. 9Intelligence and delegation leads to...The need to build systems that can act effectively on our behalf.
  10. 10Properties of a good AgentIndependent Action
    &
The ability of the system to act in a way that represents our best interest when interacting with other systems or humans.
  11. 11Interconnection and Distribution coupled with systems that act in our best interest implies....Systems that can cooperate and reach agreements (possibly even compete) with other systems that have different interests. Much like we do with other humans.
  12. 12Agent DefinitionAn agent is a computer system situation in some environment and capable of autonomous action in this environment in order to meet its objectives.
  13. 13A Multi-Agent SystemIs a system in which multiple agents (often with different interests and goals) interact.
To be succesful they have to cooperate, coordinate, and negotiate.
  14. 14Agent DesignHow to build autonomous agents that can carry out the tasks we give them.
  15. 15Society DesignHow to build agents that are capable of cooperating, coordinating, and negotiating with other agents.
  16. 16NASA DS1Space probe that recognized fault and reoriented itself to make contact with ground crew.
  17. 17An intelligent agentIs a computer system capable of flexible autonomous action in some environment.
  18. 183 Featuires of Flexible Autonomous Action1. Reactive: Able to perceive env and respond.
    2. Pro-active: Able to take initiative and work proactively towards goals.
    3. Social: Able to communicate, coordinate, negotiate, and cooperate.
  19. 19Types of environementsAccessible and Inaccesible
  20. 20Accessible EnvironmentAn environment in which the agent can obtain complete and accurate up-to-date information about the environments state.
  21. 21Inaccessible EnvironmentAn environment in which the agent can't get complete knowledge about the environments state. (Like the whole internet)
  22. 22Deterministic vs. Non-DeterministicA deterministic environment has a specific guaranteed outcome for each action.
A non-deterministic one does not. We can consider the real-world as non-deterministic.
  23. 23Static vs. DynamicA static system can only be changed by the agent.
A dynamic one has other processes that change it. Like weather for example.
  24. 24Discrete vs. Continuous. An environment is discrete if there are a fixed number of actions and precepts in it. (How computers work)
In real life there are more.
