Cellular respiration 4
Anaerobic respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen. Unlike aerobic respiration the NADH is oxidised by fermentation, a process in which no more ATP molecules are generated.
Fermentation; in the absence of oxygen, the pyruvate generated by glycolysis can follow one of two metabloic pathways; alcoholic fermentation, lactate fermentation
Alcoholic fermentation; occurs in plants and yeast that are expiring anaeorbically
- Glucose (6C)
- 2 pyruvate (3C)
- 2 Ethanol (2C)
- 2 CO2
- Glycolysis
- Glycolysis
- 2 pyruvate (3C)
- Glucose (6C)
Lactate fermentation; occurs in animals that are respiring anaerobically
- Glucose (6C)
- 2 pyruvate (3C)
- 2 lactate (3C)
- 2 pyruvate (3C)
- Glucose (6C)
Anaerobic
- does not require O2
- Involves glycolysis
- Generates small amounts of ATP quickly
- Takes place in cytoplasm

Aerobic
- Requires O2
- Involves gylcolysis, link reaction, krebs and ETC
- Generates large amounts of ATP slowly
- Takes place in cytoplasm and mitrochondria
