Cellular respiration 4
  1. Anaerobic respiration takes place in the absence of oxygen. Unlike aerobic respiration the NADH is oxidised by fermentation, a process in which no more ATP molecules are generated.
    1. Fermentation; in the absence of oxygen, the pyruvate generated by glycolysis can follow one of two metabloic pathways; alcoholic fermentation, lactate fermentation
      1. Alcoholic fermentation; occurs in plants and yeast that are expiring anaeorbically
        1. Glucose (6C)
          1. 2 pyruvate (3C)
            1. 2 Ethanol (2C)
              1. 2 CO2
                1. Glycolysis
                2. Glycolysis
              2. Lactate fermentation; occurs in animals that are respiring anaerobically
                1. Glucose (6C)
                  1. 2 pyruvate (3C)
                    1. 2 lactate (3C)
                2. Anaerobic
                  1. does not require O2
                    1. Involves glycolysis
                      1. Generates small amounts of ATP quickly
                        1. Takes place in cytoplasm
                  2. Aerobic
                    1. Requires O2
                      1. Involves gylcolysis, link reaction, krebs and ETC
                        1. Generates large amounts of ATP slowly
                          1. Takes place in cytoplasm and mitrochondria
