1.2 Memory
RAM is volatile, meaning it looses data.
- faster than most memory but costs more
- only data currently in use
- more RAM improves the performance of the computer
- more RAM improves performance of the computer
ROM is non volatile meaning it doesn't loose its data when turned off
- Firmware is a permanent software programmed into ROM
virtual memory is like RAM and is on a hard drive
- It is only temporary
- it is slower than Ram as RAM is more direct
- its used when RAM is full up on memory
BIOS: basic input/output system, contains programs that load the hardware
- ROM contains BIOS as it needs to start the program when it is turned off
solid state
- hard disk drive
- some parts are in order for it to work
- often seen in computers
- no moving components
- hard disk drive
- parts of it move in order for it to work, often seen in computers.
- no moving components needed to operate
- hard disk drive
flash memory
- hard disk- magnetic storage that holds files and programs
cache
- stores frequently used data and instructions
- accessed quicker than normal RAM as it is closer to the processor
- can't hold much
registers
- holds a small set of data that is currently in use
Volatile and Non Volatile
- Volatile: data is emptied when the power is turned off
- Non Volatile: Data is not lost when power is turned off
