Programming Language
IDE
- (integrated development environment) is a piece of software which provides features that help a programmer to develop their program.
- consists of the following: debugger, interpreter, compiler, editor. ( DICE )
Debugger
- Identifies and fixes errors in a program.
- Highlights errors in the code and may suggest possible solutions
Interpreter
- Needed every time you want to run a program.
- A translator turns the source code into machine code.
- Translates source code into machine code one line at a time.
Compiler
- Translates all of the source code at the same time. and creates one executable file (able to be run by a computer).
- once compiled the programs run quicker however compiling takes a long time. Compiled - convert (a program) into a machine-code or lower-level form in which the program can be executed.
- Translates the entire source into machine code.
Editor
- Allows the end user to enter the program code. it can colour code keywords and may even autocomplete words as you type.
Translator
- three types of translators assemblers, compilers and interpreters.
- Needed to either compile or interpret the source code so that the computer (CPU) can understand it.
Assembly language (assembler)
- A low level programming language which uses a small instruction set. These instructions are translated into machine.
Mnemonic
- Shortened command words which are used in assembly language. For example, "Little man computer" used mnemonics such as "LDA, DAT, ADD, OUT".
Opcode
- The instructions that the computer (CPU) needs to carry out.
Operand
- a low level programming language which used a small instruction set. These instructions are translated into machine code.
Machine code
- The lowest level programming language consisting of 0's and 1's
